Australia's Daintree Rainforest

April 10, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

2017 was not my first visit to the land down under.   This is a Throwback Tuesday Tribute to my favorite images taken in 2009 while on a three week journey with my best friend from the States.  Seeing as how this year I didn't make it up to the North-eastern rainforests of Queensland, this post highlights the area around Cairns, the Daintree Rainforest World Heritage Site and Mossman Gorge.

A lovely view looking south down the eastern coast. No people, large white sand beaches and warm water.  Unfortunately, this day held a swim ban as Box Jellies swarmed in the waters.

Where the Daintree Rainforest meets the Coral Sea.  As usual for a rainforest... it was raining.

Barron Falls, north of Cairns in what many would call its normal state... just a trickle of water down a tiered façade.  In the wet season it is known to be a raging and astounding site.

Spirals of large, tough vines attach themselves to trees and hang like a jungle-gym of rope across the interior of the forest, often reaching many hundreds of feet high.

The Mossman Gorge is home not only to plentiful water, flora and fauna but it is also the oldest section of surviving rainforest on the planet!  At over 135 million years young, with the proper protection it is expected to thrive for years to come.

A famous sign - The top sign should just be a warning for a speed bump and the lower one to watch for Cassowaries.  Now it is a popular and quite comical tourist stop within the Daintree.

A moment of sunshine and the over 80% humidity in the canopy of the forest can both be seen and felt even in May.  From this high mountain top, if no fog had formed a person could see to the Ocean and the thousands of acres that make up a portion of the Rainforest.

Thanks for reading!
