Summer Across this Land

June 21, 2016  •  Leave a Comment

Summer. The time of year here in North America that we usually associate with June, July and August.  The time of year for festivals, retreats and activities.  The following images are encompassing of the theme of summer.  These photos have been taken between June and August across the country over the last 3 years and represent what I think, stereotypically, are considered emblems of the season.

fireworks, night, shutter speed, colors, action, Fire In The SkyFireworks during the Fourth of July

One of the most well known holidays, especially where fireworks are concerned, is that of Independence Day on July 4th.  I love watching the spray of colors fill the sky.   Take the camera, add in a tripod and slightly longer exposure times and you can actually take what you see home with you.

firefly, lightning bugs, stars, night, Firefly StarsFireflies in a field in Michigan under a starry Sky

The other spot to use a tripod is when shooting the night sky AND fireflies as I did on this image when we were in Michigan to visit family.  I had never seen a picture with fireflies before and thought to try it out.  I have since searched and found some pretty neat ones and I conclude this one needs some work but I still love it and want to share it.  I have been around these interesting bugs before but hadn't paid them much attention. My husband introduced me to them on our last trip to the Midwest and we enjoyed returning to childhood while out for hours catching them in our palms.

Tent, lake, forest, night, light, dusk, Tent GlowA tent in illuminated with light while set up in the woods on the edge of Wasco Lake, Oregon.

This photo was taken while on a camping trip with my mom to Wasco Lake near Three Finger Jack (you can see the top of it in the left corner of the image).  She manned the light coming from the tent.  This is another image in which a tripod is very important in order to get exposure correct.

Fishing, lake, water, boat, dock, Generational FishingGenerations fishing together on Mirror Lake in Idaho.

Summer fishing trip between two generations.  These two spent all afternoon on Mirror Lake in northern Idaho, with this boat, fishing together. I don't know if they ever caught anything - I am sure they did, the lake is known for a good fishing stock.

Summer Across This LandSmall People Big CanyonPeople walk up the Oneonta Gorge, Oregon during low water.

This is Oneonta Gorge on the Oregon side of the Columbia River.  In the summer the water flow decreases enough that the entire gorge can be walked up through using the creek as the trail to a waterfall where it dead ends. The impressive, narrow and steep canyon is lush green with moss and fern.  You must get to this spot early to get a picture with no people... but I kind of like the people in it - it gives you a perspective.

Bees and flowers... I don't know if we can get more summery than this! This bee was collecting lots of pollen from a field of Bachelor Buttons near Mt. Adams, Washington.

This image was taken on my way to a power line construction project in California.   The line went right over this farmers field and his equipment was often nearby.  I don't remember what the crop was, only that at one time it was green and being in SoCal the harvest season is early!

This was taken out of my window while driving the car. I know. This is not a habit of mine let me assure you.  The person on the motorcycle is my husband and we are traveling through Wyoming trying to beat the approaching storm.  I am pretty happy with how it turned out and continues to be one of my favorites.

dandelion, seed, wishwood, puff, sepia, Summer DandyDandelion that has gone to seed in a field during the summer.

This is what I have called a Wish Wood for sometime, however, it is better known as a dandelion that has gone to seed.  I like these little puffs of leftover flower and they have granted many good wishes of mine to come true.  I remember this one was a very big one and I didn't blow its seeds away.

This is a small highlight of my favorite images encompassing this theme.  By clicking on any of these images you can be directed to a larger, theme oriented, gallery which I invite you to visit!
