Squiggel Me A ColorAbstract Light Painting using City Lights
What is the basis behind abstract photography then you may ask? Sometimes called non-objective, experimental or conceptual photography, it is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials.
Follow the Dotted LineAbstract Light Painting
In the case of this blog I am using light sources such as street lights, car lights, fire and stars to create an image that is uniquely different and all my own. They all are images in which I said to myself... "hum, that would make interesting artwork on MY wall, or someone elses for that matter!"
Fire AntAbstract Light Painting using Fire Sparks
Using color, light, shadow, texture, shapes and forms to convey a feeling, thought, sensation or impression may be the general purpose behind abstract photography. It may also simply be a photographers artistic twist that simply happened on a whim or out of an "oops" photograph. Of course I would like to say all of these were planned and my creative brain knew exactly how to create the image but in fact, that may not be the case.
Lite RayneAbstract Light Painting using Car Lights
Sometimes the image is purposely staged to create a surreal appearance from a real object. Such as this image where I took perfectly good lights but noticed that they made a pretty array of colors. Moving my camera around made nice 'abstract' lines that I was later able to edit to create the color pop.
Red Yellow BallAbstract Light Painting using Car Tail Lights
I like the color spectrum in this image. I also like the simplicity of the circles and the balance of them within the photo. I picture this hanging blown up on a wall, maybe with a little finger paint added in for texture :-)

As mentioned above there are many ways to do abstracts. I call this light paint and I hope you enjoyed seeing the world, abstractly, through my light gathering lens this week!
